Complete Guide to Education Loans in India (2026)
Higher education in top Indian institutions (IITs, IIMs, AIIMS) or universities abroad (USA, UK, Canada, Australia) requires structured financial planning. Education loans bridge the funding gap with low interest rates and extended repayment timelines.
1. Moratorium Period & Interest Calculation
Unlike regular loans where EMI starts immediately upon disbursement, education loans offer a Moratorium Period (Repayment Holiday): Course Duration + 6 Months (or 1 Year after securing employment, whichever is earlier).
- Simple Interest During Moratorium: Banks charge simple interest on disbursed tuition fees during the study period. If parents service simple interest monthly during the moratorium, banks often provide a 1.00% interest rate concession!
- Capitalization of Interest: If simple interest is unpaid during moratorium, it gets added to the principal balance at the end of moratorium, increasing your starting loan principal when EMI begins.
2. Section 80E Tax Deduction (Unlimited Interest Relief)
Section 80E provides one of the most generous tax deductions under the Income Tax Act:
- No Upper Cap: Unlike Section 80C (₹1.5L cap) or Section 24b (₹2L cap), Section 80E allows 100% deduction on the entire interest paid in a financial year!
- Eligibility: Available for individual borrowers paying loan interest for higher education of self, spouse, or children.
- Tenure: Deduction can be claimed for up to 8 consecutive assessment years starting from the year repayment begins.
3. Collateral & Subsidy Rules (Central Government CSIS Scheme)
| Loan Amount Cap | Collateral Requirement | Co-applicant / Guarantor |
|---|---|---|
| Up to ₹4.0 Lakh | NO Collateral | Parents as Joint Borrowers |
| ₹4.0 Lakh to ₹7.5 Lakh | NO Collateral | Parents + Third Party Guarantee |
| Above ₹7.5 Lakh | Tangible Collateral (Property / FD) | Parents as Joint Borrowers |
Under the Central Sector Interest Subsidy (CSIS) scheme, students from economically weaker sections (EWS with family income up to ₹4.5 Lakh p.a.) get 100% interest subsidy during the moratorium period for professional courses in India.
